Garland Cooking Equipment Heritage

The history of Garland Cooking Equipment commenced in 1864 when the Garland Line was established as a small business in Detroit. The young but passionate enterprise clung to a dream: to manufacture the world's best stoves and ranges, working tirelessly with the motto of "Bring your passion to the surface." 1873 marks the early successful attempts of bringing passion to the surface, the first giant step toward becoming a world leader. The startup Garland Line grew into Michigan Stove Company, delivering more than 200 Garland commercial stoves.

Garland Cooking Equipment's legacy took a different direction in the first half of the twentieth century. Michigan Stove Company married to Detroit Stove Works. The Garland Line continued its production of Garland commercial ranges and stoves with the original Garland brand name. In 1953, an independent manufacturing facility in Toronto, Ontario, was dedicated to Garland's ground-breaking stoves and ranges. Three years later, the Garland Line was acquired by Welbilt Company. Welbilt carried Garland's US production to Maspeth, NY, allowing the Canadian facility to continue growth in Toronto.

Relying on Welbilt's culinary expertise, engineering experience, and industry insights, the company evolved into Garland Commercial Industries operating in Pennsylvania in 1973. Finally, the Garland Group was established in 1995. Today, the company still carries out its business operations as a member of the internationally-recognized Welbilt family together with other leading foodservice equipment manufacturers, each holding number one or two positions in their product segments.

Recent Milestones In Garland Cooking Equipment Production

Ways of cooking have become more versatile and operating a food service business more demanding since the first Garland commercial ranges. Today's space limitations, cost-efficiency, and changing customer expectations motivate operators to choose equipment that can cook high volumes in minimum footprint without sacrificing flavor. Garland Group has managed to remain responsive to such developments by introducing time and money-saving products into the market. This success did not go unnoticed. Here are some of the Group's award-winning contributions in recent years.

  • Garland commercial grillthe XPress® Grill, received the National Restaurant Association's (NRA) Kitchen Innovation Award of 2017 for addressing "operator concerns from labor, energy and water efficiency to food safety, sanitation, cross-functionality, and space-saving." The Xpress Grill is a two-sided cooking appliance that can reduce cook times by half versus the standard grills. With a simple push of a touch-screen button, you can precisely control temperatures and cook food at consistent quality through both grill plates. Besides, it reduces energy consumption by up to 24%. Garland Group releases the Xpress Grill in three sizes.
  • Garland® Instinct™ Induction powered by Inducs Series won the 2018 NRA Hotel-Motel Show Kitchen Innovation Award as the "the very best equipment innovation" of 2018. The Inducs Series is composed of induction countertop appliances. What sets them apart from conventional induction equipment is the patented Real-Time Temperature Control System, the only induction monitoring system. It makes cooking faster and safer at more precise temperatures. In Garland Group's Instinct models are hobs, woks, and griddles.
  • Garland Group's high-performance XHP Broilerwas announced as the recipient of the 2020 Kitchen Innovations Award by NRA "for innovation that represents the gold standard of foodservice equipment." In 2021, the same broiler was entitled the Blue Flame Product of the Year Award by Blue Flame Alliance for "revolutionizing the industry by using high power but low energy consumption." It reduces natural gas consumption by up to 50%. Besides energy reduction, the patented burner design also minimizes flavor transfer.
  • Garland Active Compression for Clamshell Griddlewas rewarded the NRA's Kitchen Innovation Award 2022, recognizing "the year's most forward-thinking and cutting-edge innovations that meaningfully improve foodservice operations." Active Compression's simple locking mechanism allows the users to customize the space between top and bottom plates. Each top plate exerts Compression on products separately. Thus, you can cook food items of different sizes in the same batch.
