Water softener cartridges are inserted in the housing of a water softener. Hardness in water can cause mineral buildup in equipment parts. Water softeners reduce hardness by exchanging mineral ions with sodium ions. Thus, they minimize acidity, chlorine, scaling, and unwanted taste and odor. However, cartridges in water softeners need replacement to keep treating the water.
The water softener cartridge system works slightly differently from water filters: While water filter cartridges generally must be replaced in 3-6 months, water softener filter cartridges can be changed in one year. A change-out will be necessary when the water softener reaches its water volume, but it would be best to follow the treatment capacity specified by the manufacturer.
