German Design for Buffet & Food Presentation

APS is a design-led German brand whose entire catalog focuses on modern buffet and food display, combining melamine, acacia and other woods, stainless steel, slate, glass, and concrete-look finishes. Anton Assheuer and Josef Pott founded the company in 1933 in Sundern, Sauerland, and APS stands for Assheuer + Pott. The brand remains family-run in its fourth generation and still produces at the same Sundern site. It carries roughly 3,500 products, launches 200 to 300 new items a year, and supplies more than 90 countries, making it one of Europe's leading suppliers of professional buffet articles.

APS Germany & Libbey

APS Germany is a Libbey Select Partner, the group of premium European tabletop brands Libbey distributes across North America. Libbey signed an exclusive U.S. and Canada distribution agreement with APS Germany in May 2019, and APS supplies the buffetware and serveware through Libbey's network. Chef's Deal carries Libbey and the other Select Partner brands, like Nachtmann, Heart&Soul, and Schönwald, for glassware, dinnerware, and flatware to pair with an APS buffet.

What Is Buffetware?

Buffetware is the commercial equipment used to present and serve food on a self-service line. Buffetware includes display stands and risers, GN-compatible crates and pans, food and cake display covers, beverage and dry-food dispensers, and chafing dishes for hot holding. Dinnerware is what a guest eats from; buffetware is what the food is displayed and served from before that point.

Buffetware enhances the food presentation by raising a dish to eye level and holding it in a protective material. It also boosts perceived value with consistent GN footprints, matched covers, and functional serving vessels that maintain the optimum service temperature, control portioning, and keep the line moving.

APS Germany Materials: Melamine, Acacia, Stainless Steel & Slate

APS Germany primarily uses melamine, wood, stainless steel, and slate:

• Melamine: Durable, break-resistant, and light enough to carry a full 47⅜ oz (1.40 L) bowl one-handed. Melamine tableware is waterproof and commercial dishwasher-safe, but it is not suitable for use in a microwave or a conventional oven.
• Acacia and other woods: APS Germany offers acacia, oak, beech, and even mango wood for natural warmth and healthy use in crates, buffet stands, boards, and bowls.
• Stainless steel: Most products in APS Germany's portfolio are made from 18/8 stainless steel for long-term resistance and feature a polished look for enhanced elegance. You can find steel and metal trays, inserts, chafing dishes, and serving utensils built to withstand heat, wear, and cleaning cycles.
• Slate and stone-look finishes: dark, matte surfaces for cheese, charcuterie, and dessert displays.
• Glass: dispensers, decanters, and storage jars for transparent display.

APS Germany by Use Case

The same GN-based system scales up and down, so the right mix depends on your service.

• Breakfast buffets and hotels: cereal and dry-food dispensers, glass beverage dispensers, chafing dishes, and food display stands and risers for pastries and preserves, and covers to keep everything protected between waves of guests.
• Catering and banquets: stackable crates, folding stands that break down for transport, and round chafing dishes for hot holding at off-site events.
• Self-service and front-cooking stations: melamine bowls and plates for guest handling, with portion-sized serving dishes.
• Healthcare and senior living: break-resistant melamine and lightweight pieces that reduce drop risk and are easy to handle, in ceramic-look finishes that keep dining rooms from feeling institutional.
• Campus and cafeteria dining: high-turnover melamine serveware, condiment caddies, and utensil holders built for constant reset and heavy dishwasher cycles.
• Bakery and pastry display: cake covers, countertop display cases, and pastry display cases for grab-and-go and dessert counters.

Why Operators Choose APS Germany

Because APS Germany buffetware offers functionality as well as visually appealing designs for a smooth buffet setup:

• Presentation that lifts perceived value: attractive dishes framed in wood, slate, or stone-look finishes make the same food read as more delectable.
• GN-modular pieces that build flexible displays: crates, pans, covers, and risers share Gastronorm footprints, so a GN 1/1 cover, two GN 1/2 pans, or four GN 1/4 crates occupy the same space and swap in mid-service.
• Durable, low-maintenance materials: break-resistant melamine and 18/8 stainless components are commercial dishwasher safe and survive the reset cycles a buffet runs several times a day.
• One coordinated range instead of five suppliers: stands, boards, bowls, covers, dispensers, chafers, and the cruet sets and menu holders that finish the station all come from the same design program in matching finishes.
• German design and manufacture: pieces such as the dual-serve cold buffet are marked Made in Germany, produced at the company's Sundern site by a fourth-generation family manufacturer with roughly 3,500 products in the range.

How to Build a Buffet with APS Germany

Build the line in four passes: set the GN grid, then the heights, then the materials, then the covers and dispensers that match each food type.

• Start with GN sizes: Decide the footprint per dish in Gastronorm terms, GN 1/1 for a main dish, GN 1/2 for sides, GN 1/4 for condiments and pastries.
• Work in at least three heights: a flat tray at counter level, a mid-riser, and a tall stand or tiered folding stand. Levels create sightlines and allow you to fit more onto a fixed table length.
• Mix materials and shapes deliberately: pair acacia crates with slate boards and melamine bowls, and rectangles with round or organic-shaped pieces, since variety presents abundance and elegance.
• Match the cover to the food: use domed covers for cold and exposed dishes, cloches for cakes and pastries, chafing dishes for anything that must stay hot, and glass dispensers where the contents sell the drink.
• Coordinate the finishes: Match wood tone, metal, and copper finishes across cruet sets, napkin dispensers, menu holders, and even the trash cans, so the station reads as a single design.
