Ice Bins

Commercial Ice Bins

Ice storage bins are essential for restaurants, bars, hotels, catering services, and foodservice professionals to chill drinks, preserve perishables such as fish and vegetables, and maintain the cold temperature of food. Commercial ice machines quickly produce large batches of ice in one cycle, but it is not possible to use all of this before it melts. Additionally, edible ice must be stored properly to prevent bacterial and microbial growth. Ice storage bins are, therefore, the perfect solution for commercial and residential settings that need safe ice storage.

What is an Ice Bin?

An ice bin is a specialized commercial ice equipment designed to hold, store, and maintain large volumes of ice at optimal temperatures until needed for service or use in commercial and industrial settings. Ice storage bins ensure a consistent ice supply, maintain hygiene, provide accessibility, and offer reliable storage of ice for extended periods.

How Do Ice Bins Work?

Ice bins operate with commercial ice maker heads, which are installed on top of the ice storage bins and feature a lever or sensor to stop ice production when the bin is full. Ice bins feature enhanced insulation on all walls, doors, and bottoms to retain the interior chill, reduce melting, and maintain ice quality.

What are The Types of Ice Bins?

The types of ice bins are modular ice bins, undercounter ice bins, rolling ice bins, and freestanding ice bins. Each ice storage bin type has its benefits and features for your business's specific needs.

Freestanding Ice Bins: These ice storage bins by Kloppenberg and Follet are high-capacity, standalone units that can hold up to 5,922 lbs (2,658.32 kg) of ice, making them ideal for high-traffic restaurants, bars, and hotels. Some freestanding ice storage bins feature mobile ice carts with a capacity of up to 250 lbs (113.39 kg) to facilitate ice transfer, offering a faster loading and unloading design.
Undercounter Ice Bins: These compact units feature heights ranging from 32 to 38 inches (81.28 cm to 96.52 cm) to fit undercounter areas, providing a working surface at the top. Thus, they are ideal for use in bars and space-limited commercial kitchens. Commercial undercounter ice bins are available in various widths, ranging from 12" to 36" (30.48 cm to 91.44 cm), and can hold up to 300 lbs (136.07 kg) of ice.
Modular Ice Bins: Designed to operate with a commercial ice maker head, modular ice bins are engineered to combine the ice maker and ice bin, occupying less space while ensuring ice safety during production. They are available in various sizes, ranging from 22 to 96 inches (55.88 cm to 243.84 cm) in width, and feature a large ice storage capacity of up to 1,693 pounds (767.93 kg).
Rolling Ice Bins: These mobile ice transport solutions feature caster wheels, enabling easier ice transportation from the production section to the service or event area, making them a perfect choice for catering and event organizations. Rolling ice bins are available in various capacities, from 100 to 300 lbs (45.35 to 136.078 kg). Additionally, mobile ice bins feature stainless steel exteriors, addressing both front-of-house and back-of-house applications.

What are The Considerations to Choose the Right Ice Bin for Your Business?

To select the ideal ice bin for your business, consider factors such as storage capacity, production materials, space requirements, ice access, drainage, and brand.

Storage Capacity: Ice storage bins are available in a wide range of capacities, from 100 to over 6,000 lbs (45.35 kg to over 2,721.55 kg). Therefore, you must determine the daily ice requirement of your business and select an ice bin accordingly. The number of customers you serve daily is the fundamental factor in the amount of ice used in your establishment. For instance, if you serve 100 people per day, you need around 200 pounds (90.71 kg) of ice in a restaurant, while bars' ice needs will be more than 300 lbs.
Material and Durability: Ice bins are primarily made from stainless steel, offering long-term durability in commercial settings. However, there are also plastic options available, primarily for mobile operations, while some ice bins feature veneer covers for use at the front of the house.
Space and Installation Requirements: Selecting a suitable model for the available space in your establishment will save you from having to reorganize your kitchen layout. The width of the ice bins ranges from 14 to 96 inches (35.56 cm to 243.84 cm), and they can measure more than 90 inches (228.6 cm) in height. Freestanding and modular ice bins require ample floor space, while undercounter ice bins offer compact solutions, ideal for tight spaces.
Ice Access and Dispensing Mechanisms: Commercial ice bins feature efficient and effective dispensing mechanisms, including gravity-fed systems or push levers, to streamline ice access and enhance sanitation. Furthermore, they offer first-in-first-out dispensing designs to ensure you always have fresh ice. They come with anti-microbial coated ice scoops, and most standalone ice bins enable direct ice transfer to the rolling ice bins.
Drainage and Cleaning Features: Built-in drainage systems facilitate the handling of excess water; therefore, opting for an ice bin with drainage reduces the time spent on cleaning and draining.
Brands and Models: Chef's Deal retains an extensive ice bin collection that contains Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, Follett, Kloppenberg, Ice-o-Matic, and Icetro.
