Playground Dinnerware: Stoneware & Mixed-Material Tabletop by BHS

Playground dinnerware is the trend-driven tabletop brand of BHS tabletop, the German tableware group behind Bauscher and Schönwald. The collection centers on textured Nara stoneware paired with marble and wood presentation pieces. Chef-driven restaurants, small-plate concepts, hotel buffets, and cafés use it to add a design-forward accent to daily service.

Chef's Deal organizes the assortment by category. Stoneware bowls, plates, and platters form the core range, while display risers and matching coffee-service pieces round out the tabletop program.

Playground by BHS Tabletop (Bauscher & Schönwald)

Playground by BHS tabletop is an in-house trend range from BHS tabletop AG, headquartered in Selb, Germany. BHS launched Playground in 2017 and develops it through changing materials, shapes, and table-presentation pieces. Some distributors list Playground items under Schönwald, while Bauscher and Schönwald remain porcelain brands within the broader BHS tabletop family.

Playground & Libbey

Playground and Libbey represent a distribution relationship rather than common ownership: Libbey Foodservice lists Playground among its Libbey Select Partner brands and sells Playground products through its foodservice platform. BHS tabletop remains the brand behind Playground, while Libbey provides North American distribution.

Reactive-Glaze Stoneware Meets Wood & Marble

Reactive-glaze stoneware meets wood and marble in the two ideas that define the collection's look. Each stoneware piece pairs a smooth, glazed interior with a ridged, textured exterior, set on near-invisible feet that make bowls and plates appear to float above the table. The reactive crackle glazes build a patina-like, cast-iron look without the weight of actual cast iron.

Playground then extends that same material contrast beyond stoneware. Platters and risers pair black marble with oak and walnut, giving operators a way to build height and texture on a buffet or shared table instead of relying on stoneware alone.

Stoneware Bowls & Dip Dishes

Stoneware bowls and dip dishes cover Nara formats from 3⅛-in (7.938-cm) round dip dishes to 8¼-in (20.955-cm) bowls. Smaller pieces suit sauces, sides, and accompaniments, while larger round and square bowls handle soups, salads, pasta, and shared servings. Selected Nara bowls are explicitly stackable for storage.

Stoneware Plates

Stoneware plates include 5.875-in (14.922-cm) round coupe formats to 11-in (27.94-cm) dinner plates in plain and embossed rim styles. The smaller format supports starters and smaller composed dishes, while the high-rim plate provides a larger surface for entrée presentation. Chef's Deal lists Nara stoneware as microwave-, oven-, and dishwasher-safe.

Platters & Serving Trays

Platters and serving trays combine two Playground lines: Nara oval and rectangular stoneware platters and Ananti black marble platters. Operators use both for shared plates, charcuterie boards, and other display-forward presentations.

Cups, Mugs & Saucers

Cups, mugs, and saucers extend Playground into espresso, coffee, and tea service, with Nara offering stoneware mug formats in the current Libbey Foodservice assortment. The Nara collection includes both handled and handle-free mugs.

Display Risers & Stands

Display risers and stands come from the Ananti collection in oak and walnut, in one- and two-step configurations. Buffets, pastry cases, and raw bars use them to add height and separation between dishes.

Creamers & Sauce Dishes

Creamers and sauce dishes round out the category list with creamer pitchers and stoneware sauce and dip dishes. Operators pair them with the matching cups and bowls to finish coffee and condiment service in the same look. Match the creamer, dish, cup, and dinnerware pattern when building a coordinated tabletop program.

Playground Dinnerware Collections

Playground dinnerware collections on Chef's Deal center on Nara stoneware for the core place setting, with Ananti marble-and-wood pieces for display and Embrace stoneware pieces extending the range.

Nara Stoneware

Nara stoneware is Chef's Deal's core Playground collection designed by Carsten Gollnick, with plates, bowls, dishes, cups, mugs, and platters for professional foodservice. The assortment offers smooth or relief-textured outer surfaces, patina-like crackle glazes, and multiple colors. Chef's Deal stocks it in black, grey, white, and black/white; the BHS range also includes rosé and brown, available by request.

Ananti Marble & Wood Presentation

Ananti is a modular Playground presentation system built around oak and walnut pieces with interchangeable inserts. The system includes marble, terrazzo, porcelain, and stoneware components, while different foot heights create staggered presentation levels on tables, buffets, and charcuterie displays. This makes Ananti a presentation platform rather than a conventional dinnerware collection.

Embrace, ReNew & Other Playground Collections

Embrace and ReNew are Playground stoneware collections made with Eco-Gres®, a BHS material containing 90% recycled ceramic. Chef's Deal lists creamer pitchers and select plates and bowls in Embrace's black and light glaze finishes. The wider BHS range, including Spot-On, Sea, and cast-iron pieces, is available to quote on request.

Playground Dinnerware for Restaurants, Buffets & Hotel Breakfast

Playground dinnerware elevates 3 workflows in restaurants, buffets, and hotel breakfast service.

• Small-plate & tasting-menu service: Nara dip dishes and square bowls plate courses and sides in individual portions.
• Buffets & breakfast lines: Ananti risers and marble platters build height on the buffet, while Nara bowls hold fruit, yogurt, and toppings.
• Coffee service: Matching Nara cups, saucers, and creamers close the loop from plate to beverage.

Operators running standard white porcelain can add these pieces as accents rather than replace a full pattern.

How to Choose Playground Dinnerware

Choose Playground dinnerware by matching the collection look to the course first, then size and color the order.

• Compare collection looks: Weigh the textured Nara stoneware look against the marble-and-wood Ananti look before ordering.
• Size by course: Fit 3.5 in (8.89 cm) dip dishes and square bowls to sides, 8.25 in (20.955 cm) plates to appetizers, and 10.625 in (26.988 cm) plates to entrées.
• Plan one base and one accent color: Pick one base color and one accent color rather than mixing several finishes on the same table.
• Compare bowls by ounce capacity: Skip diameter, since two Nara bowls of the same width can hold different volumes.
• Order a few extra pieces per case: Add a few extra pieces to cover breakage and routine rotation.

Is Playground Dinnerware Good for Commercial Use?

Playground dinnerware is well-suited for commercial use. BHS tabletop, a long-established German professional tableware manufacturer, designs and builds the line specifically for restaurant, hotel, and café service rather than retail use. BHS refreshes the range on a regular cycle to keep it current for chef-driven concepts.
