Somat – Smart Waste Reduction Solutions

Somat is a forward-thinking company specializing in waste reduction solutions. Established in 1962 as Somat Corporation, it has always been committed to environmental sustainability. As an Illinois Tool Works Food Equipment Group member since 1999, the brand has leveraged innovative technologies and expertise to help businesses, schools, hospitals, cruise ships, government facilities, and other high-volume operations minimize their environmental footprint. The comprehensive range of Somat waste management solutions includes cutting-edge garbage disposal systems and pulpers designed to efficiently process organic and food waste, ultimately diverting it from landfills.

Somat Garbage Disposal Systems

Somat garbage disposal systems are a game-changer in waste management. They employ advanced technology to efficiently break down organic waste, reducing it to a fraction of its original volume. Somat’s user-friendly and hygienic waste grinders, hydra-extractors, dehydrator systems, and waste grabbers seamlessly integrate into various commercial and institutional settings to streamline waste disposal and save on waste management costs.

  • Waste Grinders: Grinders are integral to Somat pulpers, reducing waste by 87.5%. They grind food waste with a 5-HP motor and 24 grinding teeth. The ground waste is then mixed with water into a slurry. The brand presents two models. The MP4/B-5 is a complete grinding system with a mini press machine, grinding 700 pounds (317.51 kg) of food waste per hour. Water is removed from the slurry in this mini press, resulting in a semi-dry pulp that can easily be discharged into a container. The second D-5 model is attached to a Somat remote pulping system. It processes 400 pounds (181.44 kg) of food waste an hour.
  • Waste Extractors: The ground food waste comprises 95% water and 5% solids. These specialized machines remove excess water and feed it into the pulping system for reuse. Hydra-extractors are available in 4 models: While the HE6-GT processes 400 gallons (1514.16 liters) of pulping wastewater only, the other three can handle 1600 to 5000 pounds (725.75 to 2268.96 kg) of a waste mix, including food scraps, cardboard, plastics, and cartons.
  • Waste Dehydrator: Somat dehydrator DH-100W is a revolutionary solution that reduces waste by up to 93%. It stirs food waste and other compostable disposables with paddles in its decomposing chamber heated to 350°F (176.67°C). The result is a dry, earthy material that can be used in composting processes.
  • Waste Grabber: Somat Grabber is essential to the brand’s waste management systems. With a magnetic system, it catches flatware, cans, and other metal items from the waste flow.

Somat Pulper Systems

Somat pulping systems represent an efficient and eco-friendly approach to managing foodservice waste in large-scale applications. These systems integrate various Somat garbage disposal units into a full waste management line, converting tough and fibrous materials into a fine, pulpy slurry. The company’s close-coupled and remote pulpers eliminate the mess, labor, costs, and environmental damage associated with traditional disposal methods. They process 1250 pounds (566.99 kg) of waste per hour.

  • Close-Coupled Pulpers: They are composed of a pulper and a hydra-extractor installed near the source of waste generation. The waste enters the pulper’s tank through a feed chute. It is ground into a slurry and then fed into the extractor for de-watering. The dried waste is pumped into a container, and the extracted water is pushed back into the pulper for reuse.
  • Remote Pulpers: These systems connect waste-producing areas to a remote pulper through a network of pipes or conveyors.
