Residential Range Hoods

Residential range hoods come in several types:

• Under-cabinet hoods are designed to fit beneath cabinets and are commonly found in most homes.
• Wall-mounted hoods attach directly to the wall, often with a chimney design.
• Island hoods hang from the ceiling over a kitchen island.
• Insert or custom hoods are built into cabinetry or a decorative enclosure.
• Downdraft hoods pull air down into vents, ideal for kitchen islands with limited overhead space.

A 400 CFM hood provides stronger ventilation and is ideal for medium to heavy cooking, especially when using gas burners or cooking frequently. A 300 CFM model may be enough for light cooking or smaller kitchens. Choose based on your range’s heat output and how often you cook.

Ductless range hoods (recirculating hoods) operate without exterior venting. These units utilize filters, typically made of charcoal or carbon, to capture odors and grease, then release clean air back into the kitchen. They are ideal where ductwork isn't feasible, but require regular filter changes and aren’t as effective as ducted models.

Class 1 and Class 2 hoods refer to fire safety and venting classifications, mostly relevant in commercial settings. Class 1 hoods manage grease and flammable vapors with fire suppression systems. Class 2 hoods are used for steam and heat without grease. These terms rarely apply to residential range hoods.

The terms “range hood” and “vent hood” are often used interchangeably. Both refer to a kitchen ventilation system installed above a cooking surface. Some people use “range hood” for standard residential units and “vent hood” in broader or commercial contexts, but functionally they serve the same purpose.

No, it’s not always necessary. Ducted hoods vent air outside and offer the best performance for removing grease, odors, and heat. However, ductless hoods filter air through carbon filters and recirculate it back indoors. While more flexible to install, ductless models are less powerful and better suited for light cooking.
